DEFINITION OF RESEARCH 

According to Fred Kerlinger, research is an organized enquiry designed and carried out to

provide information for solving problems.

MEANING OF BUSINESS RESEARCH 

Business research is a process of acquiring detailed information of all the areas of business and using such information in maximizing the sales and profit of the business.

OBJECTIVES OF BUSINESS RESEARCH 

The objectives of business research can vary depending on the specific needs and goals of the organization conducting the research. However, some common objectives of business research include:

  1. Identifying opportunities: Business research can help organizations identify new market opportunities, trends, and customer needs, allowing them to develop new products or services that better meet customer demands.

  2. Improving products and services: Research can help organizations understand what customers like and dislike about their existing products and services, allowing them to make improvements and stay competitive.

  3. Enhancing customer satisfaction: Research can help organizations understand customer needs and preferences, allowing them to deliver better customer service and increase customer satisfaction.

  4. Improving efficiency and effectiveness: Research can help organizations identify areas where they can improve their operations, reduce costs, and increase efficiency.

TYPES OF RESEARCH

Research can be broadly classified into the following types:

  3. Descriptive Research: This type of research is used to describe a phenomenon, such as the prevalence of a disease or the characteristics of a population. It typically involves collecting data through surveys or observation and using descriptive statistics to summarize the findings.

  4. Exploratory Research: This type of research is used to explore a phenomenon in depth, often with little prior knowledge or understanding of the topic. It typically involves collecting data through interviews, focus groups, or observations and using qualitative methods to analyze the data.

  5. Experimental Research: This type of research involves the manipulation of one or more variables to determine their effect on a particular outcome. It typically involves randomly assigning participants to different conditions and using statistical methods to analyze the data.

  6. Applied Research: This type of research is conducted to solve practical problems or inform policy decisions. It is often conducted in real-world settings and involves collaborating with stakeholders to identify research questions and disseminate findings.

  7.  Historical Research: It is defined as the type of research that examines past events or combinations of events to arrive at an account of what has happened in the past. It is carried out to discover the unknown; answer questions, recognize the relationship that the past has to the present; record and assess activities of individuals, agencies, or institutions; and assist in understanding the culture in which we live.

RESEARCH APPROACHES 

There are several research approaches that can be used to conduct research, depending on the nature of the research question, the data needed, and the methodology that the researcher wishes to use. Here are some of the most common research approaches:

  1. Experimental Research: This approach involves the manipulation of one or more independent variables to see how they affect a dependent variable, while controlling for extraneous variables. Experimental research is often used in psychology and other social sciences.

  2. Survey Research: This approach involves collecting data from a sample of individuals through the use of questionnaires or interviews. Survey research can be used to gather information about attitudes, beliefs, opinions, and behaviors.

  3. Observational Research: This approach involves observing and recording behavior in a naturalistic setting. Observational research can be used to study human or animal behavior, and it can be conducted through participant observation, structured observation, or unstructured observation.

  4. Case Study Research: This approach involves in-depth analysis of a single case or a small number of cases, usually to gain an understanding of a particular phenomenon. Case study research is often used in psychology, sociology, and anthropology.

  5. Correlational Research: This approach involves examining the relationship between two or more variables, without manipulating any of the variables. Correlational research can be used to identify patterns and relationships between variables, and it is often used in psychology and other social sciences.

  6. Historical Research: This approach involves studying events that occurred in the past, often through the use of primary sources such as diaries, letters, or government records. Historical research is often used in history, archaeology, and anthropology.

  7. Action Research: This approach involves researching a problem or issue within a particular organization or community, with the goal of finding a solution or improving the situation. Action research is often used in education, healthcare, and community development.

Research methods and methodology are two closely related terms that are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings.


Research methods refer to the specific techniques and tools that researchers use to collect data and analyze information in order to answer research questions. Examples of research methods include surveys, interviews, experiments, observations, and case studies.

Methodology, on the other hand, refers to the broader framework or approach that guides the entire research process, including the choice of research methods, the interpretation of data, and the presentation of results. Methodology encompasses the theoretical and philosophical assumptions that underpin research, as well as the overall research design and strategy.

In summary, research methods refer to the specific tools and techniques used in research, while methodology refers to the overall approach or framework that guides the research process.

RESEARCH AND SCIENTIFIC METHODS 

Research and scientific methods are essential tools used by scientists and researchers to investigate and understand phenomena, develop new knowledge, and validate existing knowledge. The scientific method involves a systematic approach to developing and testing hypotheses, collecting data, analyzing results, and drawing conclusions. Some common steps in the scientific method include:

  1. Observations and question formulation: Scientists observe and ask questions about a particular phenomenon or problem they want to investigate.

  2. Hypothesis formulation: Scientists develop a tentative explanation or hypothesis about the phenomenon they are investigating.

RESEARCH PROCESS

  1. Define the research question: This is the first step in the research process, where you clearly identify the problem or question that you want to investigate. You should be able to clearly articulate the research question, and it should be specific enough to guide your research.

  2. Review the literature: This step involves gathering and reviewing relevant literature, such as academic articles, books, and other sources, to gain an understanding of the current state of knowledge on the topic.

  3. Develop a research design: This step involves developing a plan for how you will collect and analyze data to answer your research question. This may involve designing surveys, experiments, or other data collection methods.

  4. Collect data: This step involves actually collecting the data using the methods you have developed in step 3. This may involve conducting surveys, experiments, or other data collection methods.

  5. Analyze data: This step involves analyzing the data you have collected to identify patterns, trends, and other relevant information that can help answer your research question.

  6. Draw conclusions: This step involves drawing conclusions based on your analysis of the data. You may also need to consider the limitations of your study and how your findings relate to existing knowledge on the topic.

CRITERIA OF RESEARCH 

Good research can be defined as a well-planned and executed study that contributes to knowledge, solves a problem, or answers a research question in a valid, reliable, and ethical manner. The following are some criteria that can help evaluate the quality of research:

  1. Validity: Validity refers to the extent to which the research measures what it intends to measure. A study is considered valid when it accurately measures the concepts it aims to measure.

  2. Reliability: Reliability refers to the consistency and stability of research findings. A study is considered reliable when it yields consistent results when repeated.

  3. Objectivity: Objectivity refers to the degree to which the research is free from bias and personal opinions. A study is considered objective when it is conducted without any influence from the researcher's personal beliefs or interests.

  4. Reproducibility: Reproducibility refers to the ability of the study to be replicated by other researchers. A study is considered reproducible when other researchers can obtain similar results when they conduct the study using the same methods.

  5. Generalizability: Generalizability refers to the degree to which the research findings can be applied to the population from which the sample was drawn. A study is considered generalizable when its findings can be applied to other populations beyond the sample used in the study.

  6. Ethical considerations: Ethical considerations refer to the extent to which the research adheres to ethical principles and guidelines, including informed consent, confidentiality, and protection of participants from harm.

  7. Usefulness: Usefulness refers to the extent to which the research contributes to knowledge, solves a problem, or answers a research question that is relevant and significant.

Overall, good research should have sound methodological approaches, generate valid and reliable results, be objective, ethical, and contribute to knowledge in a meaningful and useful way.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESEARCHERS IN INDIA 

  1. Funding: One of the biggest challenges faced by researchers in India is the lack of funding for their research projects. The government and private institutions do provide funding, but it is often limited and difficult to obtain.

  2. Infrastructure: The research infrastructure in India is not as developed as in many developed countries. Researchers often have limited access to modern equipment, technologies, and software needed for their research work.

  3. Limited research opportunities: The number of research opportunities available in India is often limited, particularly in niche areas of study. This results in a lack of exposure and opportunities for researchers to work in their preferred areas.

  4. Publication and patenting: Indian researchers often face challenges in publishing their research work in reputed international journals, which can impact their careers and funding opportunities. Additionally, the process of patenting intellectual property can be challenging and time-consuming.

  5. Cultural and language barriers: Researchers in India may face language barriers in communicating their research to a global audience. Moreover, cultural barriers can limit their ability to collaborate with researchers from other countries.

MEANING

Entrepreneurship is a process of actions of an entrepreneur who is a person always in search of something new and exploits such ideas into gainful opportunities by accepting the risk and uncertainty with the enterprise.

ELEMENTS OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP 

  1. Innovation: An entrepreneur is the key source of innovation and variation in an economy. It is actually one of the most important tools of an entrepreneur's success. They use innovation to exploit opportunities available in the market and overcome any threats. So this innovation can be a new product, service, technology, production technique, marketing strategy, etc.

  2. Risk-Taking: Entrepreneurship and risk-taking go hand in hand. One of the most important features of entrepreneurship is that the whole business is run and managed by one person. So there is no one to share the risks with.

  3. Vision: Vision or foresight is one of the main driving forces behind any entrepreneur. It is the energy that drives the business forward by using the foresight of the entrepreneur. It is what gives the business an outline for the future – the tasks to complete, the risks to take, the culture to establish, etc.

  4. Organization: In entrepreneurship, it is essentially a one-man show. The entrepreneur bears all the risks and enjoys all the rewards. And sure he has the help of employees and middle-level management, yet he must be the one in ultimate control. This requires a lot of organization and impeccable organizational skills.

d. Evaluation: In this stage, you evaluate your idea to see if it is feasible, practical, and useful.

e. Implementation: Finally, you implement your idea and create a product, service, or solution.

a. Ideation: In this stage, you generate ideas by brainstorming and exploring different possibilities.

b. Development: Once you have a list of ideas, you develop them further by conducting research, testing, and refining them.

c. Implementation: This is where you turn your idea into a product, service, or solution that you can sell or offer to your customers.

d. Commercialization: Finally, you commercialize your product by launching it in the market, promoting it, and creating a business model around it.

  1. Invention:

a. Problem identification: In this stage, you identify a problem that needs to be solved.

b. Research and development: You conduct research and develop a solution to the problem.

c. Prototype creation: You create a prototype of your invention to test and refine it.

d. Patent application: Once your invention is developed and tested, you apply for a patent to protect your intellectual property.

e. Manufacturing and distribution: Finally, you manufacture your invention and distribute it to your customers.

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE ENTREPRENEURSHIP 

  1. Internal Factors: The internal environmental factors are mainly the environment in which entrepreneurs are born and brought up and work. Internal factors are those which will stimulate the entrepreneurs from within to take up entrepreneurial ventures. Some of them are: 

a. Strong desire of entrepreneurs to do something independently in life. 

b. Technical know-how or manufacturing experiences acquired by them. 

c. Business experience in the same or related line. 

d. Family background including size, type and economic status of family. 

e. Occupational origins of the entrepreneurs. 

Various other internal environmental factors that facilitate the emergence of entrepreneurship are:

➢ Encouragement of family members 

➢ Encouragement of friends and relatives

2. External Environment: The success of entrepreneurship in a region at any point of time depends on the very many external environmental factors.

  1.  Economic Environment - The different economic environmental factors which influence/ inhibit entrepreneurship are: Structure of the economy, Industrial Policy, Agricultural Policy, Growth pattern of National income, G.D.P., Savings and capital formation in the country. Besides that, Balance of trade and balance of payments, trade and tariff policy etc.

  2. Legal Environment - Entrepreneurs should know what the prevailing legal environment is by knowing the latest position in legal enactments relating to various aspects of entrepreneurial venture. Such as formation of the unit, collaboration, foreign exchange, industrial dispute, labor management, social security benefits, consumer protection etc. 

  3. Political Environment - The working political system in a country influences the entrepreneurial growth by designing and implementing various policy matters pertaining to promotion of entrepreneurship. Hence entrepreneurs and industrialists should have representatives on various government bodies at all levels of policy formulation and planning. 

  4. Socio-Cultural Environment - In the modern days a suitable entrepreneurial culture must be created by developing a healthy work environment and modem attitudes towards work giving social recognition etc. These factors will give psychological stimulus which in turn promotes innovation, inspiration, ethics and values which are very essential for a successful entrepreneur.

  1. Intrapreneurship: Intrapreneurship refers to the act of developing new ventures within an existing organization or company. Intrapreneurs are employees who exhibit entrepreneurial characteristics and are given the freedom to explore and innovate within the company. They often work on new projects, products, or services that can benefit the organization.

  2. Technopreneurship: Technopreneurship refers to entrepreneurship in the technology sector. Technopreneurs are individuals who create and manage innovative technology-based businesses, such as software development, biotechnology, or nanotechnology.

  3. Cultural entrepreneurship: Cultural entrepreneurship involves creating and managing businesses that promote cultural and artistic activities. Cultural entrepreneurs create new markets for artistic and cultural products and services, and often contribute to the growth of the creative industries.

  4. International entrepreneurship: International entrepreneurship involves creating and managing businesses that operate in multiple countries. International entrepreneurs often face unique challenges, such as cultural differences, legal and regulatory issues, and currency exchange rates.

  5. Ecopreneurship: Ecopreneurship involves creating and managing businesses that are environmentally sustainable. Ecopreneurs focus on developing products and services that have a low environmental impact, such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, or eco-tourism.

  6. Social entrepreneurship: Social entrepreneurship involves creating and managing businesses that have a social or environmental mission. ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROCESS

Entrepreneurship process typically involves the following steps:

  1. Idea generation: The first step in entrepreneurship is coming up with an idea for a new product, service, or business. This idea can be generated through personal experience, identifying a gap in the market, or by observing a problem that needs solving.

  2. Market research: Once an idea has been generated, the next step is to conduct market research to validate the idea and determine if there is a market for it. This involves researching the industry, competitors, target customers, and potential demand.

  3. Business planning: After validating the idea, the entrepreneur needs to develop a detailed business plan. This plan includes defining the product/service offering, identifying target customers, creating a marketing and sales strategy, determining the financial projections, and outlining the organizational structure.

  4. Financing: Once the business plan has been developed, the entrepreneur needs to secure funding to start the business. This can come from personal savings, loans, grants, or from investors.

  5. Implementation: After securing financing, the entrepreneur can start implementing their plan. This involves setting up the business, hiring employees, developing the product/service, and launching marketing and sales campaigns.
